HIU's senior point guard Matt Green is averaging a team-high 17.9 points, a few more than close friend and classmate Kenny Morgan. Against Anaheim’s Bethesda University on Monday, Green hit nine three-pointers and finished with a career-high 42 points, tying him for second all-time in Hope history for points scored in a single game.
“He’s an unselfish shooter, and that’s not usually the same thing,” Czech said last week. “He’s a guy that nobody has a problem with taking a shot.”
Green, a 5-foot-9 sharpshooter, has 60 more field goal attempts than his closest teammate, but shoots 50 percent from the floor. He leads Hope by a mile in 3-pointers made, sinking close to half of his shots beyond the arc. It can be argued that he and Morgan compose the Golden State Athletic Conference’s best backcourt.
Hope began the 2014-15 campaign ranked 10th by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, but has risen to No. 3. The Royals are beating opponents by close to 27 points per game, and scoring points like no Hope team since the mid-1990s.
“We’re on a roll right now,” Green said. “Everything’s clicking our way.”
Green is the latest in a long line of stellar Hope point guards, the heir to former teammates and National Christian College Athletic Association All-Americas Jeremy Kilgore and Kris Rosales.
