Alumnus Bryan Sands (BA ’01), longtime HIU Director of Campus Ministries, now serves as Pastor of in Honolulu, Hawaii. Under his leadership, KCC sprang into action to care for those in need during the COVID-19 pandemic, partnering with their local community to provide face masks, donations and food.
A member of Kaimuki donated 200 yards of fabric to be sewn into facemasks. Volunteers joined together to sew more than 2,000 facemasks. One of the sewers shared “how great it has been to use this opportunity to help our children learn how to sew, but more importantly, how to give.” The masks have been donated to various community groups including: The Queen’s Medical Center, Kapi’olani Medical Center, Malama Mentors/Common Grace.
The church donated additional funding to River of Life Mission, a local group that serves the homeless. Food donations were also collected and distributed to families in need.
“We have a deep desire and responsibility to love others in tangible ways,” says Pastor Sands. “If God has blessed us with resources, we should share what we have, not only with our church ‘ohana’ (family), but our neighbors and community as well.”
