Catholic Studies Program

鈥淚ndividuals participate, according to their degree of readiness, in the Church鈥檚 catholicity鈥 Origen calls such a soul 鈥anima ecclesiastica鈥: a soul with the dimensions of the Catholic Church.鈥  鈥 Cardinal Hans Urs von Balthasar

St. Ignatius鈥 discovery that we can engage in Spiritual Exercises is among the great landmarks of Christian education. Continuing this 500-year tradition of Jesuit education, SLU鈥檚 Catholic Studies Center complements its academic program with a full range of co-curricular activities tailored to the spiritual formation of our students so that they might become ever more fully Catholic.

Why Study Catholic Studies at SLU?

The Church teaches that 鈥渢he faithful must learn the deepest meaning and the value of all creation, as well as its role in the harmonious praise of God鈥so that] the world may be permeated by the spirit of Christ.鈥 (Lumen Gentium 搂36)

In service of this mission, the Catholic Studies Program at SLU introduces students to the full riches of the tradition, teaching them how to perceive God鈥檚 glory in the world and to think with the Church. They practice engaging the culture creatively with the tools of their primary field of study and leave SLU ready to seek the greater glory of God in the worlds of business, education, health, law, engineering and academia.
