Information for Faculty Teaching Distance Courses

As part of Â鶹´«Ã½'s commitment to quality Jesuit distance education, all distance education courses offered by SLU should be characterized by the following priorities in their design: presence, interaction, inclusion, community, transparency, equity, reflection, structure and support.

To meet these expectations, as well as those outlined in federal regulations and accreditation standards, the University has established specific expectations for distance education instructors and courses.

At Â鶹´«Ã½, anyone teaching a distance course (in any format) must, at a minimum, do the following:

  1. Complete formal preparation in distance education pedagogy
  2. Successfully complete the University’s Distance Course Review Process

Approval to offer a course in a distance format is the purview of the academic unit in which the course is to be offered. Courses offered in the synchronous online or dual-mode formats require approval of the Dean.

Evaluation of online instruction takes place within the academic unit, consistent with the faculty evaluation practices of the department/program.

The University provides a range of resources to support faculty in their continued growth as distance educators. Please visit our faculty resources support page for more information.
