Tips for Creating a Successful Financial Aid Night
Make sure it doesn’t conflict with other events that your community may be participating in, such as major sports games or competitions. We recommend avoiding Mondays and Fridays.
It’s never too early for students to start thinking about the financial aid process. While they won’t be completing the steps until senior year, you might want to think about including juniors and underclassmen to get them thinking about their plan to pay for college.
In this new post-pandemic world, you may see higher attendance at virtual events or your families might be craving some in-person interaction. Gauge other events at your school and determine which would be the best fit for your community.
Consider pairing financial aid information with other postsecondary planning information to maximize benefit for families to attend.
Do your families need information on how to complete admission applications and request documents from the school? Do they need access to a platform to track their application completion status? This would be a great time to talk about how your school’s process works.
- Financial Aid 101: Gives a broad overview of the financial aid process, highest efficacy in early fall ahead of FAFSA opening.
- FAFSA Presentation: Walks through the FAFSA screen-by-screen to give families an idea of what to expect while filling out the FAFSA. Best presented close after opening of FAFSA form for coming year. We expect the 2025-2026 FAFSA to open in December 2024.
- FAFSA Completion: Give your families an opportunity to come to the school to complete their FAFSA, so they have a resource to ask questions if they run into trouble. Most of these will be completed in December and January to encourage early FAFSA filing.
