Driver’s License, Driving School and State ID Information

It may be to your benefit to have a driver’s license or state-issued ID while you study in the United States. 

To apply for a driver's license or state ID, you must:

  1.  Request a letter from the Office of International Services.
    It will take 3-5 days to process your letter. Please plan accordingly. Each letter is valid for 30 days from the date of request. Do not request a letter if you are planning to be outside the U.S. for the next 30 days. To request your letter:

  3. Click on the third tab on the right hand side "Student Request Center." You will see icons for the various requests on the right.
  4. Click on "Student Letter Requests," answer all questions and submit. We will process your request and respond to you.     
  5. While you are waiting to receive your letter from the Office of International Services, begin to gather all . Locate your immigration status to learn what additional documentation is required.
  6. If you do not have a Social Security number, you must contact the Social Security Administration to get an exemption letter. 
  7. Find a to apply for an ID. The closest office to SLU is at . Driver’s license applicants will need to pass a written test, vision test and road sign test. These requirements are not necessary if you are applying for a state ID.
