Division of Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine
The Division of Pulmonary Medicine within 鶹ý's Department of Pediatrics cares for children with a variety of acquired and congenital respiratory disorders as well as sleep disorders.
Members of the division are actively involved in the teaching of medical students and residents, as well as students in disciplines such as nursing, allied health (physician assistants) and respiratory therapy. We also provide continuing medical education (CME) programs locally and nationally.
An active clinical research program is an integral part of the activities of the division and includes work in sleep disorders, asthma and cystic fibrosis. Members of the division have active leadership roles in administrative responsibilities for SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital, 鶹ý and national organizations including the , , the , and the .
Clinical Services
Our division has an active outpatient program with multidisciplinary clinics caring for children with cystic fibrosis, asthma, sleep disorders, and for children who are dependent on technology (e.g., children receiving home mechanical ventilation). In addition, children with more routine pulmonary disorders are seen as outpatient consultations.
Our division has also expanded outpatient services to help coordinate care for children with medical complexity (including those in need of tracheostomy support and mechanical ventilation) through the Complex Medical Care Program.
Research
Gary Albers, M.D., has participated in numerous multicenter clinical studies. Current projects include a study of the effectiveness of a novel mechanism of treating the virulence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and assessing new strategies for inhaled antibiotic therapy in CF patients.
Brent Haberman, M.D., has been involved in clinical research for interstitial lung diseases and obstructive sleep apnea. He has written review articles about sleep disorders in children with neuromuscular disease. Dr. Haberman is currently involved in clinical research for pediatric obstructive sleep apnea and it's relationship to ADHD as well as investigating pediatric restless leg syndrome in young children.
Blakeslee Noyes, M.D., has participated in a number of multi-center studies examining new therapeutic agents for asthma and cystic fibrosis. Noyes remains the local PI for the EPIC study, a study examining risk factors for the development of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection in CF patients. He is the lead PI for CF newborn screening efforts in Missouri and Illinois. Noyes has an ongoing clinical interest in the diagnosis and treatment of children with vocal cord dysfunction.
Kurtis Sobush, M.D., has helped develop the Complex Medical Care Program at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon where clinical research projects include the optimization of tracheostomy and home ventilator care. Further work is focused on improving health care resource utilization in children with medical complexity. Additionally, Sobush has multiple clinical/translational cystic fibrosis research interests as the local PI for studies related to the airway microbiome and biomarkers indicative of disease progression.
Robert Wilmott, M.D., is involved in treating CF lung disease that is now in Phase III trials.
