Goal 5: Community Engagement

Â鶹´«Ã½ School of Medicine will be a community-responsive leader, working in partnership to reduce health inequities and improve the health and well-being of the St Louis region.

Objectives

  1. Expand access to healthcare services to the community.
  2. Strengthen existing relationships and develop new ones to address the health needs of people in medically underserved communities.
  3. Increase faculty and learner involvement in community outreach projects.
  4. Increase the next generation of committed physicians for our region.
  5. Ensure that SLUSOM research agenda considers community benefit.
  6. Strengthen connections with stakeholders — SSM, SLU alumni and board, and the community

Strategies and Opportunities

  1. Education
    1. Establish a health systems science pillar in our undergraduate medical education.
    2. Incorporate service learning and participatory research into undergraduate medical education curriculum.
    3. Resume the Urban Community Health Track for medical students.
    4. Grow pipeline project for students from the region, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
  2. Service
    1. Strengthen the Health Resource Center.
    2. Acquire and operate a mobile clinic.
    3. Establish staff coordinator of community engagement.
  3. Research
    1. Strengthen community-based research.
    2. Create mechanisms for community input into our research agendas.
    3. Participate in the IHN Network Community Academic Partnerships (NCAP).
  4. Partnerships
    1. Participate as technical advisor of Integrated Health Network.
    2. Collaborate with Casa de Salud and the Immigrant Service Providers Network (ISPN)
