Practical Experience in Health Professions From the Start

Prepare for a Career in Health Care

Health care careers are among the most popular at Â鶹´«Ã½ — for good reason. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that more jobs will be created in health care professions by 2030 than any other occupational category.

Â鶹´«Ã½ has a dedicated college for health sciences — the Doisy College for Health Sciences, named for the Nobel Prize-winning SLU professor who discovered vitamin K — and for nursing — the Trudy Busch Valentine School of Nursing — but you'll also find health-related careers in schools throughout campus.

Graduate Ready for Your Career in Health Care

As a health care major at SLU, you'll be practicing your skills in some of the best hospitals and clinical sites available. Our health care programs take you from the classroom into high-tech learning labs and straight into contact with real patients and health care situations as an undergraduate.

Junior and senior year are all hands-on, clinical experiences as well as experience in the kitchen. Everything you learn in class, you put it to work."

— Lissane Kafie, Nutrition and Dietetics Major

Experience Hands-on Learning

Health care is hands-on. At SLU that's true from day one. With Â鶹´«Ã½'s 9:1 student to faculty ratio, you’ll enjoy clinical and internship opportunities tailored to your career goals.

Clinical Sites Around St. Louis — and Beyond

With some of the best-ranked hospitals in the country and the state, the St. Louis region is a fantastic place to start your career in health care. The St. Louis Regional Chamber says "over the past decade, the health care industry has outperformed total regional employment and is an ever-growing force in the St. Louis regional economy."

Students majoring in health care-related fields choose from hundreds of clinical sites around the region, working with all kinds of patient populations.

Want to get hands-on experience closer to home over the summer? SLU's close network of nearly 135,000 living alumni as well as relationships built by our world-class faculty means our students are connected with hands-on clinical experiences nationwide.

Cafés, Kitchens and Gardens

From Fresh Gatherings Café — a student-run café that offers local farm-fresh food in Â鶹´«Ã½â€™s Allied Health Building — to Salus Center Kitchen — an interactive classroom/shared-use kitchen for local businesses and organizations — SLU students interested in nutrition and food security graduate with abundant experience in the field.

Get your hands dirty, literally. SLU's Urban Garden connects the neighborhood with fresh food. It also connects SLU students with children and educators in St. Louis City Public Schools to plant, harvest and prepare food from the garden. A camp set in the garden and run by nutrition and dietetics, occupational therapy and physical therapy students is one of SLU's most popular summer options for children.
